Melanie earned her B.A. in English from UC Santa Barbara, her M.A. in English from UC San Diego, and her certificate in Financial Planning and Management for Nonprofits from CSU Fullerton. Her career began in the traditional classroom setting as an instructor in university-level research and writing. Melanie quickly moved to work on behalf of underserved populations, including incarcerated parents and recent immigrants. Her work with the Boys & Girls Club movement began in 2004 when she designed and implemented an intergenerational Family Literacy program which still serves approximately 1,000 families annually. In 2007 she led the way for Garden Grove Unified School District to successfully open 39 new ASES after school programs in one year. This expansion nearly doubled the size of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Garden Grove. Subsequently, Melanie and her team were chosen by CDE Region 9 to become a Learning Center and offer trainings for after school providers in three counties. Melanie has served as an officer for the Orange County chapter of the California School Age Consortium, and has also been very active in mentoring other Boys & Girls Clubs on forming strategic partnerships with their school districts. In 2008 she was selected by Boys & Girls Clubs of America as a McCabe Fellow and is currently pursuing her course of study. Melanie lives in Long Beach, California with her husband Jed. They love to travel and spend a great deal of time participating in outdoor activities such as camping, rock climbing and scuba diving. |
